Hypotrophy of conduit artery walls of the offspring of nitric oxide-defective rats BJMBR
Kristek,F.; Gerová,M..
The objective of the present study was to investigate the structure of the arterial walls of the offspring stemming from nitric oxide (NO)-defective hypertensive parents. The parents were treated with N G-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (40 mg kg-1 day-1) for 5 weeks. Blood pressure was measured noninvasively in six 30-day-old rats and nine age-matched controls. The cardiovascular system was perfused with glutaraldehyde at 120 mmHg. The thoracic aorta and carotid artery were processed for electron microscopy, and geometry was determined by light microscopy. Endothelial cells, smooth muscle cells (SMC) and extracellular matrix (ECM) were determined by the point counting method in electron micrographs of the carotid artery. The blood pressure of experimental...

Identificación y morfometría de las mandibulas de Loligo gahi y Loligo sanpaulensis (Cephalopoda, Loliginidae) del Atlántico Sudoccidental OceanDocs
Pineda, S.E.; Aubone, A.; Brunetti, N.E..
Beaks of Loliginid squids have very similar morphological features making identification of the species to be quite difficult. A new metodology to identify species from the relative growth of some parts of the beak is presented. Samples of Loligo gahi and Loligo sanpaulensiswere obtained from ten reserch cruises of RVS "Dr. Holmberg" and "Captain Oca Balda" and eight commercial landings at Mar del Plata Port during the period 1992-1993. The results obtained using the new metodology (Metric Discriminant Criterium)were compared with those resulting from the application of the Fisher's Lineal Discriminant Criterium. Both mantle length - rostral length and total weight - rostral length relationships, corresponding to each species were fitted. Either upper or...

Intestinal Wall Atrophy and Increase of Sulphomucin Secretion in the Jejunal Epithelium of Rats Submitted to Severe Protein Malnutrition International Journal of Morphology
Franco,Cássia Luiza de Marins; Sant'Ana,Débora de Mello Gonçales; Araújo,Eduardo José de Almeida.
The effects of severe protein malnutrition on the morphometry of the intestinal wall in the jejunum of adult rats were evaluated in this study. Six 90-day-old Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus) were assigned into two groups: CG (Control Group, n = 3) and MG (Malnourished Group, n = 3). CG animals were fed a 26%-protein chow whereas controls were fed a 4%-protein chow. After 90 days, part of the jejunum was collected and subjected to routine histology. HE-staining and histochemical techniques - Periodic Acid Schiff (PAS) and Alcian Blue (AB), pH 2.5/pH 1.0 - were used for the detection of glycoconjugates in 4µm -thick transverse cuts. Morphometric analysis of the HE-stained cuts revealed a decrease of the total thickness of the jejunal wall, mostly on the...

Lapillus otoliths of the Cathorops spixii (Spix & Agassiz, 1829) and Genidens genidens (Cuvier, 1829) (Actinopterygii - Ariidae) Biological Sciences
Carvalho, Barbara Maichak de; Universidade Federal do Paraná; Corrêa, Marco Fábio Maia; Universidade Federal do Paraná; Volpedo, Alejandra; Universidad de Buenos Aires.
The aim of this study was to analyze the morphology and morphometry of lapillus otoliths of the catfishes Cathorops spixii and Genidens genidens from the coast of Paraná State, Brazil. We used 147 lapillus from C. spixii and 96 from G. genidens, of different size classes. Otoliths were characterized with smooth margins for both species but with different shapes: oblong for C. spixii and oval for G. genidens. The morphological differentiation between the two species is in the anterior region: rounded for C. spixii and pointed for G. genidens. The t-test results for otolith measurements were: length (t value = -2.88; p = 0.0042), height (t value = -6.87; p < 0.000001), anterior angle (t value= 9.84; p = 0.000001) and posterior angle (t value =0.41; p...

Le complexe «Dinophysis acuminata»: identification des espèces le long des côtes françaises ArchiMer
Lassus, Patrick; Bardouil, Michele.
From seawater samples collected between 1984 and 1989 in 12 French coastal areas, a morphometric study have been realised on Dinophysis genera restricted to "acuminata" like species. Simple morphological criterias are given as suitable for discrimination of four dominant species occurring during toxic episodes in shellfish farms (Diarrheic Shellfish Poisoning): Dinophysis c-closed-integral. sacculus, D. c-closed-integral. acuminata, Dinophysis sp. and D. c-closed-integral. norvegica. This last species cannot be included in the "acuminata complex" and produces temporary blooms along southern Brittany coasts. Pending a more precise diagnosis it is recommended to clarify the relationship between toxin composition and each species previously described.

Lymphatic fluctuation in the parenchymal remodeling stage of acute interstitial pneumonia, organizing pneumonia, nonspecific interstitial pneumonia and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis BJMBR
Parra,E.R.; Araujo,C.A.L.; Lombardi,J.G.; Ab’Saber,A.M.; Carvalho,C.R.R.; Kairalla,R.A.; Capelozzi,V.L..
Because the superficial lymphatics in the lungs are distributed in the subpleural, interlobular and peribroncovascular interstitium, lymphatic impairment may occur in the lungs of patients with idiopathic interstitial pneumonias (IIPs) and increase their severity. We investigated the distribution of lymphatics in different remodeling stages of IIPs by immunohistochemistry using the D2-40 antibody. Pulmonary tissue was obtained from 69 patients with acute interstitial pneumonia/diffuse alveolar damage (AIP/DAD, N = 24), cryptogenic organizing pneumonia/organizing pneumonia (COP/OP, N = 6), nonspecific interstitial pneumonia (NSIP/NSIP, N = 20), and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis/usual interstitial pneumonia (IPF/UIP, N = 19). D2-40+ lymphatic in the lesions...

Macroscopic Morphometric Analysis of Genital Organs of Rabbit does with Differing Parturitions at 24 Hours Post-weaning International Journal of Morphology
Aragón-Hernández,Jesús; Flores-Pérez,Fernando Iván; Hallal-Calleros,Claudia; Pérez-Martínez,Mario.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the macroscopic morphometry of the ovaries, uterus and vagina in rabbit does in the first, second and third parturition at 24 hours post-weaning in order to determine if there are differences between parturitions. Weaning of the litter was performed at 30 days post-partum and 24 hours later the does were euthanized. Right and left ovaries, uterine horns-cervix and vagina were removed, and the length of each one was measured. Significant differences were found in the average of the right ovary length between the first group with respect to second and third parturition group (P 0.05 and P 0.01). Also, left ovary length was different between the first and second with respect to third parturition group (P <0.001)....

Microdesiccates produced from normal human tears display four distinctive morphological components Biol. Res.
López Solís,Remigio; Traipe Castro,Leonidas; Salinas Toro,Daniela; Srur,Miguel; Toledo Araya,Héctor.
Desiccation of human tears on glass surfaces results in fern-like crystalloids. This phenomenon has been associated with tear normality (Tear Ferning Test, TFT) and is used as a diagnostic aid to evaluate patients with Dry-Eye disease. However, TFT is focused on the assessment of only a minor fraction of desiccated tear samples and considers only the relative abundance and density of fern-like crystalloids. The aim of this study was to characterize morphologically entire desiccated micro volumes of tears from healthy donors. Tear samples were collected from 23 healthy young adult volunteers. Tear aliquots (1-3 μL) were allowed to dry on glass surfaces under ambient conditions of temperature (15-25°C) and relative humidity (40-45%). Dry samples...

The semipalmated sandpiper Calidris pusilla and the spotted sandpiper Actitis macularia are long- and short-distance migrants, respectively. C. pusilla breeds in the sub-arctic and mid-arctic tundra of Canada and Alaska and winters on the north and east coasts of South America. A. macularia breeds in a broad distribution across most of North America from the treeline to the southern United States. It winters in the southern United States, and Central and South America. The autumn migration route of C. pusilla includes a non-stop flight over the Atlantic Ocean, whereas autumn route of A. macularia is largely over land. Because of this difference in their migratory paths and the visuo-spatial recognition tasks involved, we hypothesized that hippocampal...

Mitochondria-rich cells changes induced by nitrite exposure in tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum Cuvier, 1818) Anais da ABC (AABC)
COSTA,OSCAR T.F. DA; RAMOS,CLEVERSON A.; DUNCAN,WALLICE P.; LAMEIRAS,JULIANA L.V.; FERNANDES,MARISA N..
ABSTRACT The gill mitochondria-rich cells of the juvenile Amazonian fish Colossoma macropomum were analyzed using light and scanning and transmission electron microscopy after 96 h exposure to 0.04 and 0.2 mM nitrite. Although the number of mitochondria-rich cells decreased significantly in the lamellar epithelium, no decrease was found in the interlamellar region of the gill filament. Nitrite exposure caused significant reduction on the apical surface area of individual mitochondria-rich cells (p < 0.05), with a resulting reduction of the fractional area of these cells in both the lamellar and filament epithelium. Swelling of endoplasmic reticulum cisternae, nuclear envelope and mitochondria were the main changes found in the mitochondria-rich cells....

More than one inseminated female in colonies of the independent-founding wasp Mischocyttarus cassununga von Ihering (Hymenoptera, Vespidae) Rev. Bras. entomol.
Murakami,André S. N.; Shima,Sulene N.; Desuó,Ivan C..
In the primitively eusocial wasps, especially Polistini and Mischocyttarini tribes, the physiological condition of each individual is strongly associated with its dominance status in the colonial hierarchy. As a rule, in independent-founding wasps, female wasps are all morphologically alike, and their role is apparently quite flexible even as adults. However, some studies have shown that differences in body size can exist between reproductive and non-reproductive females. Thus, the present study aimed at detecting differences between reproductive (inseminated) and non-reproductive (uninseminated) individuals based on morphological and physiological parameters. We tape-recorded the daily behavioural repertory of six colonies of Mischocyttarus cassununga for...

The present work aim to develop a methodology, using digital images processing with morphometric data to subsidize the soil mapping, in order to guide the field work becoming survey faster, better precision and cheaper. Initially the Digital Elevation Model was made (DEM), for TOPOGRID method of the ArcInfo program, using 37 topographical letters in scale 1:10.000 the Jardim river basin. From the DEM the morphometric maps of the basin had been generated (slope, flow direction and contribution area), used to elaborate the color compositions and histograms analyses in order to allow the definition of soil pattern. After that was made the comparison with the soil map elaborated by Embrapa where could be conserved great similarity of the soil units.

Revascularization surgery should ensure morphological similarity between the coronary artery and the graft. This is an important factor for its duration and permeability. The aim of this study was to analyze the morphological characteristics and morphometrics of the coronary artery segments with greater occlusion. This was an observational, cross-sectional descriptive study that consisted of two phases. A macroscopic phase in which 11 cadaveric hearts were extracted and coronary dominance and length of the anterior interventricular artery (AIA), the right coronary artery (RCA) and the circumflex artery (CXA) were determined. In the microscopic phase a total of 77 segments of these arteries were obtained and the luminal diameter, wall thickness, and amount...

Morphological and allozyme studies of midwife toads (genus Alytes), including the description of two new taxa from Spain Naturalis
Arntzen, J.W.; García-París, M..
Allozyme variation in 31 to 50 presumptive loci of 12 populations of European midwife toads of the genus Alytes show appreciable genetic divergences (DiNe from 0.29 to 0.72) among four groups. These groups correspond to A. cisternasii Boscá, 1879, A. obstetricans (Laurenti, 1768), A. muletensis (Sanchiz & Adrover, 1979), and a new species from the Betic mountains described here as A. dickhilleni n. sp. Smaller divergences among geographic groups of populations of A. obstetricans (up to DNei = 0.17) support the existence of three geographic units in Europe corresponding to the previously recognized subspecies A. o. obstetricans and A. o. boscai Lataste, 1879, plus a third one described here under the designation of A. o. almogavarii n. ssp. The analysis...

Morphological and genetic differentiation among Chilean populations of Bufo spinulosus (Anura: Bufonidae) RChHN
Méndez,Marco A.; Soto,Eduardo R.; Correa,Claudio; Veloso,Alberto; Vergara,Eliseo; Sallaberry,Michel; Iturra,Patricia.
Bufo spinulosus has a wide and fragmented range distribution in Chile (18° to 33° S) along altitudinal and latitudinal gradients. Genetic variation was estimated using RAPD (Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA) markers in 10 populations from northern and central Chile. Morphometric and genetic information was analyzed as a function of geographical origin. The correlation between genetic and morphometric differentiation was analyzed by the Mantel test. An increase in body size as a function of latitude was observed. Specimens from El Tatio had the smallest body size and the greatest morphometric divergence. The AMOVA applied to genetic data indicated that 57.85 % of the variance is explained by interregional differences and that 30.12 % of the...
